How we test

Checked by hand means checked twice, two different ways

A spreadsheet you budget on has one job: the numbers have to be right. Here is how every workbook on this site earned its place, and the counts behind that sentence.

The method

  • Two computations, compared. Each demo workbook is recalculated by the spreadsheet engine, and every headline number is compared — to the cent, and dates to the day — against an independent recomputation built separately from the raw demo inputs. The check never trusts the sheet's own formulas to grade themselves.
  • Both formats. The Excel demo and the Google Sheets demo must agree with the independent computation and with each other.
  • Protection audit. Every sheet is checked: protection on, no password, every formula cell locked, every input cell unlocked and pale amber, panes frozen on the data tabs.
  • Clean masters. The file you download is checked to carry zero demo rows — your copy starts empty, not with a stranger's numbers to delete.
  • No error strings. The recalculated demo files are swept for error values. A blank input shows a blank or a zero, never an error.
  • Tabs read from the file. The tab lists on the product pages are the tab names inside the shipped files, in order.

The counts, as reported

  • Money suite (Annual Budget, Debt Payoff, Paycheck Budget, Net Worth & Savings, and the free starter): 541,797 checks, 0 failures.
  • Airbnb Host Tracker: 219 tests, 0 failures.
  • Rental Property Tracker: 255 tests, 0 failures.

Versions and the changelog promise

Every workbook is Version 1.0 — October 2026, and its Start Here tab carries a changelog table. When a workbook changes — a fee table updated, a category list revised — the version number moves, the changelog gains a dated line saying what changed, and the new version goes through the same two-way check before it replaces the old one. The dated Airbnb fee table is the standing example: when Airbnb changes its fees, the table, its date, and the guide are updated together.
